Leadership of Baghdad’s Operation revealed that it controlled explosives and over 160 mortars in different areas of the Iraqi capital, as the Iraqi security forces intensifies their measures in the major roads and streets of Baghdad after the demonstrations that hit the capital on Saturday.
The security forces intercepted the roads leading to Tahrir Square in the center of Baghdad to secure the demonstrations organized by Sadrist Current on Saturday. The demonstrators demanded the government to amend the elections law and to replace the members of Iraq’s High Electoral Commission, accusing the current member of lack of integrity.
Iraqi security authorities announced the killing of a policeman and the injury of seven security elements by infiltrators among the demonstrators. They added that they found weapons and sharp tools held by a number of protesters.
In the same context, Baghdad excluded Governor Ali Al Tamimi, who affiliates to the Sadrist Current, revealed the killing of four elements and the injury of 320 others due to the excessive use of teargas and ammunition against the demonstrators. He acquitted himself from the demonstrators who turned to use the violence against the security forces.
On his hand, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi ordered the Iraqi authorities to take the necessary measures against those people who involved in the killing of the demonstrators.
On the other hand, a number of missiles targeted Baghdad’s Green Zone on late Saturday and its surrounding area that include a number of foreign embassies and governmental buildings. Sources revealed that the missiles came from Baladiat district and Palestine Street.
The two areas are considered from the major strongholds of Sadrist Current. Sources said that the missiles have targeted the Green Zone in response to the killing of a number of demonstrators by the security forces, as they attempted to storm the area, while the security forces shot them.
The UN mission in Iraq expressed concern over the recent demonstrations witnessed in the country, as British Defense Minister Michel Fallon expected, during his current visit to Kurdistan’s Capital Arbil, that Iraq will get rid of ISIS during this year. He said, during a press conference, “I am pleased to see the eastern side of Mousl liberated, while the operation to restore the western side of the city will be launched soon.”
