Former Yemeni president Ali Abdullah Saleh and his successor Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi
Conflict has been brewing between Yemen's president Abdrabuh Mansour Hadi, and his predecessor Ali Abdullah Saleh. The latest disputes come on the back of an April 6 presidential directive,
ordering the sacking of a number of military commanders, including two of Saleh's relatives. The air force commander, general Mohammed Saleh al-Ahmer, as well as the special guard force commander, general Tareq Mohammed Abdullah Saleh, had both refused Hadi's orders and remained in their positions.
Military sources revealed that Hadi rejected Saleh's proposal to retain his son as commander of the republican guard forces. He also changed his decision regarding Saleh's nephew, general Tareq, in return for sacking the air force commander. Meanwhile, Hadi is now considering the available options to force the implementations of his decisions. These choices include dealing with disobedient commanders as rebels, an action that may lead to prosecute these commanders in a court martial trial.
The European Union in the meantime has threatened to apply sanctions against parties that disrupt the Gulf-brokered peace plan to transfer power in Yemen. The announcement was made in a meeting between Hadi and the EU states' ambassadors in Yemen.
"We are here to express our full support for you (President Hadi) in all actions and decisions you take to put an end to the Yemeni crisis and to enable your country to pass the current conditions", Michele Cervone D'Urso, the EU ambassador in Yemen said.
Hadi expressed his appreciation of the EU states ambassadors' efforts in ensuring the security and unity of Yemen, and praised the EU as an essential and strategic partner at local, regional and international levels.
