Algeria’s ruling National Liberation Front witnesses a state of division among its leaders weeks before the launch of Algerian parliamentary elections scheduled to be held in May, as a wing inside the party has emerged to topple the party’s Director General Jamal Ould Abbas against the backdrop of the formation the electoral list announced by the party’s leaders last week.
The ruling party’s electoral list has been dominated by the businesspersons in anticipation to the coming presidential elections scheduled to be held in 2019.
On his hand, Ould Abbas refuted the accusations against his son of involving in corruption and receiving bribes for nominating specific candidate during the coming elections, stressing that his son is innocent from such accusation. He expressed his confidence of the integrity of Algerian authorities.
He added that he bears the responsibility of the results of the coming parliamentary elections, saying that the major standard they adopted to choose the party’s candidates was the efficiency. He stressed that the party would gain the confidence of the voters.
On the other hand, 60 members of the party held a meeting in the headquarters of the ruling party calling for holding an emergency meeting to move Abbas away from his position against the backdrop of corruption cases in which his men involved during the formation of the party’s electoral list.
They called for appointing a new director general meeting the aspiration of the party’s members and the Algerian community as whole. They also called the current director general for not using the name of Algeria’s president to justify his action, describing such approach as an insult against the president.
