Dominique Strauss-kahn,chief of the IMF: International Monetary Fund arrested
Dominique Strauss-kahn, chief of the IMF(International Monetary Fund) was arrested and awaits charge for attempted rape on a hotel maid in New York city this morning. The french presidential hopeful has ruined any chances
he had of ruling his country, and all this for a few minutes of potential pleasure. But why do men take such risks when they know that they are watched by the whole world for a possible Faux-pas?
Sex and power have been known to be the most detrimental aphrodisiac for many leaders throughout history and yet the one factor that keeps bringing politicians on both sides of the atlantic down. Many have been caught and exposed in recent years indulging in acts of sexual harrassment, yet some have managed to keep their positions while others miserably failed by pressure of public opinion. But what Dominique Strauss-Kahn has done that isolates him in a league of his own is the actual attempt of criminal rape, and that in itself is an act of a different magnitude. Prostitutes, sex with under age girls and homosexual acts have all shaken governments in the recent past and ended many political careers all over the world. But the one question that comes to everybody's mind everytime such indecent acts become public is the most obvious. Do these leaders abuse their high ranked positions to indulge in unacceptable behaviors hoping to get their own amunition from their title? Are they actually assuming that they are above the law?
Hasn't the Clinton-Lewinski affair made enough impact all over the world when the then president of the United States got questioned over his sexual relation with the then intern at the White House? Should't that have been enough proof to politicians the world over that the world isn't their stage? And how about the former Israeli president Moshe Katsav's who got sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a cabinet minister. Was that not another confirmation that there is no sympathy for acts of indecensy regardless of one's position? The only exception to the rule in most recent history remains undoubtedly Prime minister Silvio Berlusconi whose trial opened in Milan on the 6th of April this year on charges of paying for sex with an under age prostitute. But as neither did Mr Berlusconi nor the alleged prostitute Karima El Mahroug appeared in court on the day, the hearing was postponed after a few minutes to the 31st of this month, May 2011. Berlusconi is presently facing many charges namely for corruption, tax fraud and the latest one of sex with a minor. But to the italian prime minister's case, this was just an added detail to his famously known life of sexual endeavours. The most obvious common factor between all these leaders is the same. Risktaking. Does power make those men mad enough to think that all their actions will be properly camouflaged by their immediate entourage who would immediately clear their names and wouldn't allow anything negative to affect their career?! Do they actually believe that they are invincible and their crimes would never be reprimended? it is such great attribute for a leader or an influential person to be charismatic, confident and strong, but the more essential quality is to realize one's limits in how far he can go and admit to an inability to numb or control people's reactions to abuse of any kind. One's dignity can never be bought with money nor force. This should be the constant reminder that this is what makes us humans. This isn't Animal Kingdom..
