A report for U.S Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) revealed that the U.S supported Iraq’s former President Saddam Hussein to attack Syria to secure the oil pipelines in the Mediterranean Sea and Persian Gulf.
The report, which dates back to 1983, added that Washington was keen to urge the former Iraqi leader to launch a war against Syria, while he insisted to resume his war against Iran.
According to the report, The American position towards Syria came as a result of the threats posed by the-then Syrian regime against the U.S interests in Lebanon and the Gulf States through the closure of oil pipelines.
The American efforts have not been limited to the pressures on Iraq, while they extended to both Israel and Turkey, as Syria’s former President Hafez Al Assad could abandon his idea to avoid expected escalation from three fronts.
