Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika
The deadline to submit the electoral lists for the Algerian parliamentary elections ended midnight on Monday. Elections are planned for May 10 this year, and will witness the participation
of 47 political parties.
The elections have exacerbated conflicts within the ruling National Liberation Front Party (PFLN), that saw the birth of three new fronts who dissented from the PFLN.
The first is known as "The movement for redirecting the Party's approach", led by the former minister of transportation, Saleh Quojil. The second is the newly declared "Future Front", led by former PFLN leader Abdulaziz Beleid. The third defection was by the parliamentary president, Abdulaziz Ziary, who revealed on Monday that his name will not be inluded in the party's electoral lists, saying "he prefers to give the opportunity to the younger figures inside the party".
However, his withdrawal is believed to be connected to a dispute with the party's secretary-general Abdulaziz Belkhadem in addition to pressure from president Abdelaziz Bouteflika himself, who is also the party's honorary president.
Bouteflika's efforts are said to be not enough to close ranks between the warring fronts inside his party, which may impose a serious threat to the PFLN's chances in the upcoming elections. The party's electoral lists have missed out on well-known patriotic figures, which may be exploited by the country's Islamists who have established a new coalition called "Green Algeria".
Green Algeria consists of the Peace Society Movement (related to the Muslim Brotherhood), the Reformation Movement, and the Islamic Renaissance Movement.
The passage of the electoral deadline has killed any chance of re-unifying the PFLN, raising the hopes of its competitors in the upcoming elections.
