Mustafa Abdul Jalil, chairman of the National Transitional Council
Tripoli – Emad Agag
Mustafa Abdul Jalil, chairman of the National Transitional Council warned, Wednesday, that the country might be slipping toward a civil war, following clashes that took place on Tuesday in Tripoli between loca
l gunmen and other armed groups from Misrata.
Media reports stated cited Abdul Jalil has warned Libya could descend into “civil war”, saying that the clashes started when gunmen stormed into a hospital in Zawiya Street to take out a doctor who was on duty. The facts of the incidents however, which led to the death of six people and 14 injured, are still not clear.
Abdul Jalil hinted that the government is incapable of doing its job by saying that "it roams around the palace but is incapable of entering it."
In the same context, Commander of the Tripoli Military Council Abdelhakim Belhadj expressed his regret about what happened in the capital, which was caused by disputes between Misrata revolutionaries and members of the council in Zawiya Street.
Belhadj stated – during a joint press conference with the head of the Supreme Security Commission of Misrata, Tuesday evening – that the clashes resulted in the killing of four and injuring five others, stressing that the situation is now under control and that those who started the clashes are arrested.
Commander of the Military Council stressed that suspects are to be transferred to court, and that such actions are irresponsible and do not represent revolutionaries. He expressed his hope that safety and security would return to the capital as soon as possible.
Earlier media reports noted that the clashes started after a group of military forces went to the Intelligence building in Tripoli and ordered Misrata rebels to evacuate the building, which led to armed clashes. Media reports on Wednesday stated that calm was restored to Tripoli following the end of clashes.
It is worth mentioning that the Libyan capital, as well as other cities has witnessed many clashes between different rebel factions since the fall of Gaddafi’s regime.
