A Lebanese army tank deployed in Tripoli
Lebanese intelligence arrested two men for transporting arms in east Lebanon over the weekend while three others were detained in Mount Lebanon after a raid of their residence turned up
a large stash of weapons.
In east Lebanon, the Lebanese Army detained a Lebanese and a Syrian national trying to transport weapons, the National News Agency said over the weekend.
The agency said intelligence agents arrested the Syrian national – a member from the Kahloun family – and Lebanese Ahmad AD – from the border village of Tfeil – while they were transporting weapons, silencers, ammunition and a sniper rifle in Brital, Baalbek.
In Chouf, Mount Lebanon, the army said in a statement Saturday it arrested three individuals after a raid of their whereabouts revealed a stash of a variety of weapons.
Arabstoday sources revealed that a detainee referred to as AH is called Hannah Boulous.
Over 1,200 fuses were found in the raid, including electric fuses and Israel-made landmine fuses. US and Russian-made anti-personal mines, Israel-made mortar bombs and 21 grenades were discovered in the search. Forty-seven blocks of explosives, some weighing between 200 grams and 250 grams and others weighing between 400 grams and 500 grams, and guns were also found.
The case of the three individuals has been referred to the relevant authorities.
In another security development, armed clashes between militants belonging to the two troubled neighbourhoods of Jabal Mohsen and Bab Tabbaneh last night came to a halt as the Lebanese army intervened and continued to reinforce its presence and track those causing the unrest, a statement by the Lebanese Army Orientation Directorate said on Saturday.
A row between two citizens in the northern city of Tripoli escalated into armed fighting.
The army instantly interfered and spread its troops along the troubled regions and was able to control the situation. The troops set up roadblocks and raided the sites where the gunmen were hiding. Three soldiers and a number of citizens were injured during the operation according to the army's statement.
The mainly Sunni residents of Bab al-Tabbaneh have often clashed with inhabitants of Jabal Mohsen, whose Shiaa Alawite residents are followers of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
