Malaysia Airports Sdn Bhd (MASB) has allocated about RM12 million to resurface three short take off and landing (STOL) runways in the northern region of the Sarawak interior this year. MASB general manager Zainol Mohd Isa said the runways were in Bario, Long Bangah and Long Seridan. Each STOL was 600 metres long and the project was the largest undertaken by the company for this year. Speaking to Bernama at Ba Kelalan last night, he said the Bario STOL had been completed in May and Long Bangah was expected to be ready this September. "Work on the Long Seridan will start any time this year," he added. MASB has three other STOLs in operation in the region, which are Mulu, Marudi and Lawas. Meanwhile he said, MASB had to spend around RM8,000 to clear the mud off the runways every time there was a flood. Zainol said, it happened three times during the first half of this year.
