A Lufthansa flight with 345 passengers and 18 crew on board made an emergency landing in Canada after smoke was detected in the cockpit, a spokesman for the airline said Wednesday.
The pilots of flight LH464, en route from Frankfurt to Orlando, Florida, were using oxygen masks when they landed in the town of Gander in Newfoundland, Canada. "Due to the smoke, the cockpit crew decided to re-route the plane to Newfoundland and landed there safely," the spokesman said.
A replacement plane will be flown to Newfoundland to take the stranded passengers to their destination. The original plane will undergo a technical examination in Gander to determine the cause of the smoke.
