A speeding bus struck two cars on a highway in a crash early Sunday that killed at least 17 people and injured 35 others in western India, police said.
The bus struck the cars while they were parked on the side of the Navi Mumbai highway to fix a flat tire. All three vehicles fell into a ditch with the impact of the crash, said police constable Sanjay Shetge.
Villagers and police climbed into the ditch and helped rescue the injured and ferry them to nearby hospitals.
Shetge said the death toll was expected to rise as many of the injured were in critical condition. The driver of the bus was among those killed.
Navi Mumbai is about 30 km east of Mumbai, India’s financial hub.
Police figures show India has the world’s highest road death toll, with more than 110,000 people dying each year in accidents commonly caused by speeding, and poor vehicle and road maintenance.
