Disney has revealed the release date for Pirates of the Caribbean 5.
The fifth installment is subtitled Dead Men Tell No Tales, and will open in theaters July 7, 2017. The movie was originally scheduled to debut in summer 2015, but issues with the script caused a delay in production.
Kon-Tiki directors Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg have been tapped to direct the sequel. Gore Verbinski directed The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), Dead Man's Chest (2006) and At World's End (2007), and Rob Marshall helmed On Stranger Tides (2011). Jerry Bruckheimer produced the first four movies, but will not return for Dead Men Tell No Tales. It is unclear if star Johnny Depp will return for the sequel.
The franchise has been enormously successful for Disney; the first three films grossed a combined $2.7 billion, and the fourth earned more than $1 billion alone. The studio plans to announce a number of new Marvel films and release dates this week at San Diego Comic-Con.
