Nicolas Cage has been cast in Oliver Stone's forthcoming biopic about NSA leaker Edward Snowden.
The 51-year-old actor will portray a former U.S. intelligence officer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Stone's Snowden is based in Luke Harding's book The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man, which tells the story of Snowden's relocation from Hawaii to Hong Kong where he handed the NSA documents to journalist Glenn Greenwald.
The film will also include information from Time of the Octopus, a forthcoming novel by Snowden's Russian attorney, which chronicles the time he spent in Moscow waiting to receive asylum.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt will play the title role and Shailene Woodley will play his girlfriend. The film is currently underway in Germany and it will be released on Dec. 25.
Snowden was also the subject of the Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour.
