The Evil Dead is being adapted for television.
Creator Sam Raimi announced the news at a The Last of Us discussion Friday at San Diego Comic-Con. The director said he and brother Ted Raimi will write the series, and star Bruce Campbell is also involved.
The Evil Dead premiered in 1981, and introduced protagonist Ash (Campbell) and the Book of the Dead. Campbell reprised the character in sequel Evil Dead II in 1987, and Army of Darkness in 1992. The trilogy earned an estimated $34 million, and inspired successful rock musical Evil Dead: The Musical. Raimi produced a Fede Alvarez-directed remake/reboot of The Evil Dead in 2013 that grossed nearly $100 million at the box office.
Raimi has directed a number of other films including Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3, Drag Me to Hell and Oz the Great and Powerful.
