As part of a film series called Versus, Eva Longoria's Go Sebastien Go! follows the story of a young America's Got Talent finalist who faced racist criticism after performing the national anthem in a mariachi outfit at the 2013 NBA Finals.
When Longoria joined ESPN Films' Versus as a producer and director, she was eager to tell Sebastien De La Cruz's story first.
"I think it's important to show other sides of sports," she said in a segment of First Take on ESPN Friday morning. "It's not about the wins and losses on the field or on the court, it's about the wins in life -- and the wins that actually change the paths of others."
The short documentary was shown at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, where she told MSNBC that the way the 11-year-old handled the Twitter hate "was the real story."
"The world isn't perfect, but the world is good," the young singer reportedly said amid the backlash. "Even though bad things happen, the world will always be good."
The boy's positive attitude is what drew Longoria to his story.
The actress-turned-director will also appear in front of the camera in a new NBC comedy currently named "Telenovela," although she said the name will be changed. "We've been producing and developing it for about two years," she told Parade's Jeryl Brunner. "The show is so funny and I love my cast and crew."
"Going back to television in this climate in which the way people view content is so different. That's going to be interesting," she said. "Social media is such a big part of our lives now...so it's going to be fun."
Go Sebastien Go! airs on ESPN's SportsCenter Friday, May 8 at 6 p.m..
