US President Obama will visit Spain in July, White House officials announced Monday, just weeks after that nation holds critical elections.
The trip will take place after Obama heads to Poland to attend his fifth and final NATO summit with other world leaders, where the group will discuss how many troops to maintain in Afghanistan after 2016, according to (The Washington Post). Obama will visit Warsaw from July 7 to 9, and then head to Spain, returning to the United States on July 11.
Obama plans to meet with Spain's king as well as its acting president, according to a statement by White House press secretary Josh Earnest. "The visit to Spain, an important NATO Ally, will highlight robust security cooperation, a strong political and economic relationship, and longstanding people-to-people ties," Earnest said.
The trip to Warsaw, Poland, meanwhile, will provide Obama with an opportunity to not only discuss issues including terrorism and the flow of refugees with NATO allies, but a chance to talk about bilateral relations with Polish leaders and discuss financial and security issues with European Union officials.
Obama will "meet with the presidents of the European Council and the European Commission to discuss US-EU cooperation across a range of shared priorities," Earnest said, "including countering terrorism, fostering economic growth and prosperity, and addressing the global refugee crisis."
