A park in Singapore in commemoration of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the great revolutionary forerunner who led the 1911 Revolution to overthrow the Qing Dynasty in China, has been completed. The Zhongshan Park in Singapore is located in the central part of the main island. It is built on a piece of land allocated by the Urban Re-development Authority three years ago near the existing Sun Yat-sen Nanyang Memorial Hall. It is one of the parks around the world in commemoration of Dr. Sun. There are parks named after him now in China, including the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Taiwan. Dr. Sun visited Singapore several times during his lifetime to promote his revolutionary cause and raise funds. Hiap Hoe, the developer of the park, said the park was opened to the public about one week ahead of schedule to avoid a festival dedicated to ghosts, local Chinese daily Lianhe Zaobao reported on Friday. A huge stone was mounted in park, with Chinese words Tian Xia Wei Gong inscribed on one side -- meaning "for the people." On the other side were the remarks of Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew saying that Dr. Sun is "the one that changed the destiny of China." The park, which is part of an Identity Plan for the neighborhood, will be officially opened on Oct. 8 along with the renovated Sun Yat-sen Nanyang Memorial Hall when its renovation is completed. It will be part of the centenary commemorations of the 1911 Revolution in China.
