South Korea's LG Electronics says it is ready to start producing flexible displays for smartphones, made from plastic that allows them to bend without breaking. The flexible organic light-emitting diode panels could arrive in consumerdevices such as smartphones and tablet computers next year, Sang Deog Yeo, chief technology officer of LG Display, said. "The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices," Yeo said in an LG release Monday. LG will be going up against another South Korean competitor, Samsung, which unveiled a curved OLED display in January. Samsung has announced it intends to launch its first curved screen product -- a special edition of the Galaxy Note 3 -- this month. LG, which had previously developed a flexible e-ink display, called its OLED display "bendable and unbreakable." "What's more, it is also the world's lightest, weighing a mere 7.2 grams [0.25 ounces] even with a 6-inch screen, the largest among current smartphone OLED displays," the company said.
