In a major embarrassment for Google, the company has said it will accept PayPal payments in their online Google Play Store. Google competes with Ebay's PayPal to be a user's online payment method or mobile wallet. But the company announced Thursday that PayPal, credit card, carrier billing and gift card purchases will now be accepted in multiple countries, including the U.S., Canada and Germany. But Google has made it clear that PayPal can be used to purchase only apps, games, music, and movies -- not devices and other accessories. The search giant has added seven new markets to its carrier billing, including Singapore, Thailand and Taiwan, and now offers gift cards in 13 countries, including Germany and Japan. The move comes as a surprise because both services are stiff competitors. While it can be seen as an admission that people aren't fully accepting Google's own checkout service, the company seems to have realized they want as many users to buy as many apps, movies and games as possible, which is why the company has expanded payment options to credit cards and gift cards as well.
