Electronics giant Sony unveiled "Project Morpheus," a virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 4 gaming console, at an event during the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Starting Wednesday, Sony will give conference attendees a demo of the prototype headset, aimed at giving gamers a fully immersive experience. Attendees will be able to play stealth game Thief, intergalactic dogfighting shooter EVE Valkyrie and The Deep using the virtual reality headset. Project Morpheus will be a head-mounted display that will work with the PlayStation Camera. The headset comes with "3-D audio technology" that will let gamers hear audio from all directions and even above or below their vantage point. The device will also work with the motion-based PlayStation Move, similar to Microsoft's Kinect. "Project Morpheus is the latest example of innovation from SCE, and we're looking forward to its continued development and the games that will be created as development kits get into the hands of content creators," said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. At last year's GDC, Oculus VR caused quite a sensation when it announced the launch of the Oculus Rift virtual reality-driven HUD gaming goggles. But Sony's Project Morpheus looks like a more complete product than the Rift, although both are being packaged as a development kit for game developers interested in creating for a virtual reality interface.
