The U.S. Navy confirmed it has launched an investigation into allegations of hazing aboard a submarine in Virginia that is set to rejoin the fleet this month. A Navy spokesman told The (Norfolk) Virginian-Pilot that military criminal investigators had been looking into the situation aboard the USS Tennessee, a nuclear missile sub undergoing overhaul at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Details of the allegations were not provided; however The Virginian-Pilot said the formal investigation was launched after a preliminary inquiry last month by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. The Tennessee had a crew of 134 and can carry 24 nuclear missiles. It was scheduled to return to its home port of Kings Bay, Ga., this month after more than two years at the Norfolk yard.
