Russian scientists become to the first ever to reach a massive lake located under the Antarctic glacier shield, local media reported Wednesday."The last meters of ice were drilled at the depth of 3,768 meters and scientists reached the surface of the subglacial lake," the Rossiya TV channel quoted the Russian Academy of Science as saying. The drilling to the lake under Russia's Vostok station in the Antarctic started in 1990. The Russian Academy of Sciences compared the significance of reaching Lake Vostok to the landing on Mars.According to the reports, scientists hope to find microorganism in the lake, which has been hidden for thousands of years. They said the microorganism may have evolved into unusual life forms existing in constant cold, high pressure and high oxygen concentration, without light and nutritive substances.
