Web experts and investigators will tackle hacking
Algeria has launched a new department to combat hacking and investigate cyber crimes.
The country’s national security department unveiled plans for 40 security teams
, including eight investigators and 12 web experts, to enhance online surveillance and train police teams in ways of controlling the medium.
The department stressed the need to control “suspicious websites” – specifically ones belonging to alleged terrorist groups – in attempts to prevent harmful campaigns and propaganda.
One national security official said: “In light of keeping up to pace with the latest developments in information and telecommunications, we have created criminal laboratories in three states, equipped with the latest technologies and devices to investigate cyber crime.”
The departments will be in Algiers, Constantine and Oran.
