The State of Qatar stressed today the importance of enhancing the role of the United Nations General Assembly in terms of mediation.
This came in Qatar's statement in a meeting at the UN headquarters on the role of the UN General Assembly. The statement was read by HE Qatar's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Sheikha Aliaa Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani. HE the Ambassador said that the subject of enhancing the role of the UN General Assembly gained the attention of the member countries. Her Excellency said that the General Assembly had huge responsibilities, one of them is which is the oversight of the UN's different bodies, including the Security Council. Such roles require giving priority to improving the efficiency of the General Assembly in carrying out its duties, Her Excellency added.
Qatar's Representative to the UN then said that the spot light was currently on the General Assembly in light of the global developments and the challenges facing the Security Council in assuming its responsibilities. One of the challenges facing the UN, Her Excellency said, was dividing the powers and responsibilities of the UN and the Security Council. The Qatari Ambassador stressed on the importance of avoiding the marginalization of the Security Council.
HE the Ambassador added that the recent challenges facing the international community showed the importance of cooperation and coordination between different UN bodies. HE then stressed on the importance of implementing all General Assembly resolutions, and enhancing ties between the UN body and different international and regional non-government organizations (NGOs).
