Three interactive sessions were held in the first day of the International Conference on Human Rights Approach to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region, which kicked off in Doha Monday, with participation of an elite of experts and officials in a number of national, regional and international organizations.
The first session addressed the subject of respect for human rights as a preventive approach. The discussion focused on the role of education in promoting and protecting human rights and reducing the culture of hatred and isolation.
Some speakers believed that most conflicts in the Arab region were resulted from violations of human rights and the cover-up of these abuses, and the international community's failure to hold accountable violators of human rights.
The second session discussed the human rights-based approach to conflict situations, while the third session focused on the situation of human rights amidst conflicts.
Four more sessions will be held during the Conference second and last day on Tuesday to discuss a number of issues including the protection of women, children and minorities in conflict situations, the impact of armed conflict on the right of education, the human rights-based approach in transitional justice and humanitarian aid in the conflict zones in the Arab region.
The International Conference on Human Rights Approach to Conflict Situations in the Arab Region is organized by the National Human Rights Committee and the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) in cooperation with the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI). Honorary sponsors of the conference include the GCC General Secretariat, the Arab Maghreb Union and the Arab Parliament.
The conference aims to address measures based on human rights norms that governments, national human rights intuitions and other stakeholders can engage in the aftermath of conflict to prevent recurrence, including peace agreements, and to promote peacekeeping activities.
It also aims discuss the root causes of the current conflicts in the Arab region from a human rights perspective, integration of human rights tools and mechanisms on conflict prevention process; UN collective coordinated, national human rights institutions and civil society in addressing conflict situations and other related issues.
