Construction of a £1 billion academic quarter on the edge of the city is a step closer after a deal was signed with Cambridge University, Cambridge News reports. Dons have agreed the North West Cambridge development will include a £5.75 million contribution towards a new secondary school, as well as cash for a new primary school and health facilities. The agreement with local authorities also confirms the scheme will provide new sports pitches, community facilities and subsidised bus services. It means the formal planning permission for the project, which was agreed in principle by councillors in August, can be issued. This allows for 3,000 homes, 2,000 student rooms, and 1 million square feet of academic space. Roger Taylor, the university’s project director told Cambridge News: “Community building is at the heart of the North West Cambridge development. The public amenities of scheme will serve those who will live on the development and beyond, and these amenities will be delivered in phase one as we believe they are important foundations to support a vibrant community."
