The Faculty of Arts at Kuwait University here on Wednesday inaugurated the French Language Department with the participation of French Embassy in Kuwait and some university professors and senior officials.
Addressing the attendees who celebrated this occasion, Professor Hayat Al-Hejjy, the faculty's dean, said that the practical move toward establishing the department started in 1993 after meeting with two delegations from universities of Sorbonne and Paris.
She commended the support by President of Kuwait University professor Abdulatif Al-Bader in reactivating the French Language Department whose staff and students became seven and 60 respectively.
For his part, Cultural Attache at the French Embassy in Kuwait Francois Brossard stressed that the French diplomatic mission here is ready to enhance cultural exchange with Kuwait and offer all facilities in this regard.
Meanwhile, Professor Yossr Al-Medani, head of French Language Department, said that the faculty took this move to diversify specialties of the human sciences and cope with prestigious universities locally and globally.
"The French Language Department is an essential move as there is a pressing desire for dialogue among civilizations," she said, adding that the department is attracted by many students who realized the importance of that language as a tool of communication with different culures.
