Grand Imam of Al Azhar Dr Ahmed el Tayyeb has said he is keen on the welfare of Singaporean students of Al Azhar University.
Al Azhar acts to promote the moderate teachings of Islam, el Tayyeb said in a meeting with Singaporean minister of state for internal and foreign affairs Masagos Zulkifli.
The two sides discussed means of enhancing joint cooperation.
El Tayyeb decided to increase the number of scholarships offered to Singaporean Muslims from five to ten.
He further said that the message of Al Azhar is to interact with Muslims all over the world and make them active elements in their societies.
For his part, the Singaporean minister expressed happiness for meeting el Tayyeb.
Zulkifli praised the role played by Al Azhar to spread the culture of respecting the Other.
