The Norwegian Refugee Council in Jordan on Wednesday received 10,000 euros in donation from students of the Sorghvliet School in The Hague, Netherlands.
About 500 Dutch students aged between 12 and 17 years from the Christelijk Gymnasium Sorghvliet School organised a bicycle ride of between 20 to 100 kilometres and asked their family and friends to sponsor them so they could donate this money to support Syrian refugee youth in Jordan.
"This event highlights the cooperation between youth from different backgrounds and across continents," NRC Jordan’s Youth Project Manager Emma Bonar said.
"These young people went out of their way to help support their fellow Syrian refugee youth in Jordan because they wanted to help their counterparts develop, prosper and learn," she said.
The Netherlands Ambassador to Jordan, Paul van den IJssel, said: "We are pleased that we could facilitate this initiative whereby young citizens have themselves taken the initiative to help people who are three thousand km away, without any government incentive." The funds will support the NRC’s Youth Centre in the Zaatari Refugee Camp in providing classes in tailoring, male hairdressing, beautician arts, electrical wiring, welding, office management and ICT courses.
Additionally, all youth also take comprehensive courses in Arabic, Mathematics, Life skills and English language, and engage in a range of sports activities including some with UEFA trainers.
