Three deer hunters suspected of shooting and wounding two students at a middle school in the U.S. state of Texas have been detained and questioned, officials said Tuesday. The two students were wounded Monday by shots likely fired from land near Harwell Middle School outside Edinburg, close to the Mexican border, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino said at a news conference Tuesday, according to the Los Angeles Times. The students, one aged 13 and the other 14, were trying out for a basketball team about 4:45 p.m. Monday when they were shot, the paper quoted a school source as saying. One boy was at hospital in critical condition after a surgery late Monday to remove a bullet, and the other boy was in stable condition. Two of the three suspects, each with deer hunting rifles, had permission to hunt on two parcels of land leased to hunters. But the third man, who was on another piece of land, did not have permission and was arrested on suspicion of trespassing, officials said.Harwell Middle School is located in a rural area with two pastures close by Trevino said.School officials said Tuesday they were considering erecting a cinder block wall to protect students from hunters' bullets.
