The Qatar Chapter of the Institution of Engineers (India) on Saturday celebrated the 45th Engineers’ day at a grand function held at Sheraton Doha Hotel, attended by more than 300 members. On the occasion, two long time members of the Institution Animesh Sarkar and U U Menon, who have served the forum for 22 and 16 years respectively were honoured with the newly introduced “IEI Ratna Awards” in recognition of their contributions to their country of residence and the engineers fraternity in Qatar. Chief guest and First Secretary of the Indian embassy Sasi Kumar gave away awards to the two senior members. While lauding the engineers, the official appreciated the efforts made by the Qatar Chapter of the Institution to the country’s engineering community. The embassy official released the IEI technical souvenir and gave away a plaque of appreciation to the keynote speaker Dr Jyoti K Parikh. Parikh, executive director of Integrated Research and Action for Development (IRADe) spoke on “appropriate climate responsive technologies for inclusive growth and sustainable development”. She is a member of the Prime Minister’s Council on Climate Change –India and was among recipients of Nobel Peace Prize awarded to IPCC authors in 2007. CEO of Doha Bank Group R Seetharaman also spoke. He explained the initiatives by his bank to combat climate change and encourage sustainability by introducing the concept of “Green Banking”. He also described measures taken by Qatar and other Gulf countries to combat climate change. Chairman of Qatar Society of Engineers Ahmed Jassim Al-Jolo was the guest of honour. Eiman al-Marzouqi, a civil and environmental engineer with Qatar Shell launched the revamped website of the IEI - Qatar Chapter at the meeting. Earlier Chairman of the IEI Qatar chapter Debashish Roy welcomed the gathering and said: “The Institution of Engineers (India) is perhaps the largest professional body in the world.” The senior professional also explained the significance of ‘Engineers’ Day’ celebrations. Secretary of the chapter, Abdul Satharr later gave an overview of activities by the forum over the last one year. Dipak Dahaker anchored the entire event. Abdul Hameed Pathiyil proposed a vote of thanks. At the meeting Chief guest Sasi Kumar also presented a plaque and certificate of appreciation to Debashish Roy for his selfless service towards AMIE students and the IEI Technicians Chapter of Qatar.
