Ariana Grande and MTV are teaming up to bring back Total Request Live.
The 20-year-old singer will headline Total Ariana Live next week, a one-day revival of the classic MTV program. Grande plans to debut her new single "Break Free" during her performance, and will also make a surprise announcement. MTV News host Sway Calloway will host the special.
"It's a huge honor to be able to bring back a show like TRL," the star says. "I used to love watching it growing up. Can't wait to celebrate with my loves in Times Square. Might have some surprises, too."
TRL was a staple MTV series that debuted in 1998. Each episode counted down the top ten most requested music videos of the day, and also featured musical guests. The program was canceled in 2008 and replaced with Friday Night MTV. FNMTV ran for two seasons before it, too, was canceled.
"Only one artist has the power to turn the lights back on at 1515 Broadway in the iconic TRL studios, and that's Ariana Grande," Republic Records executive vice president Charlie Walk lauds. "The transformation to Total Ariana Live represents her one-of-a-kind star power combined with MTV's immense multimedia platform, setting the stage for the ultimate global partnership."
