Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday said he hoped that Russia had hacked his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton's home computer server to discover missing emails and make them public.
"They probably have her 33,000 emails. I hope they do. They probably have her 33,000 emails that she lost and deleted because you'd see some beauties there. So let's see," Trump said at a news conference.
"Russia, if you're listening, I hope you're able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press," Trump said at the press conference in Florida.
Wikileaks this week has published 20,000 emails from the Democratic National Committee which show that the party worked to undermine Clinton's challenger, Senator Bernie Sanders, during the primary campaign. The DNC is legally supposed to be neutral regarding its presidential candidates. Clinton was formally nominated on Tuesday night.
US intelligence agencies say they believe Russian hackers had gotten hold of the DNC emails. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said his organization would not reveal its source but said blaming Russia or anyone else was a diversionary tactic to deflect attention from the content of the emails, which reveal corruption in the Democratic Party.
Clinton was not prosecuted for mishandling classified data on her home computer server. She has acknowledged deleting 33,000 emails, which she says were personal.
Trump's campaign rhetoric has been less aggressive towards Russia than Clinton, leading some Democratic analysts to charge that Moscow is meddling in a US election to try to hurt Clinton and get Trump elected. Moscow on Wednesday denied any involvement in US domestic politics.
