eBay is ready to store personal data of Russians in Russia

The US e-commerce company eBay stated its readiness to gather and keep personal data of Russians in accordance with the law prescribing Internet companies to keep them on servers in Russia, head of eBay Russia Vladimir Dolgov said on Monday.
Russia passed the law prescribing Internet companies to keep personal data of Russian citizens in servers in Russia in 2014. The requirement will come into force from September 1.
A bilateral meeting between representatives of eBay and the Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media (Roskomnadzor) took place on April 3, Dolgov said.
"This was the first meeting of such kind with the government representatives. The main goal of eBay was to receive answers to a number of questions concerning the personal data law that will carry into effect from September 1, 2015. eBay confirms its readiness to gather and keep required information in full compliance with the law after conclusion of the meeting," eBay representative said.
The official spokesman of Roskomnadzor Vadim Ampelonskiy confirmed the fact of the meeting to TASS. "The company expressed readiness to meet requirements of the federal law," he said. No further comments were given.
According to a TASS source familiar with the course of negotiations, "eBay will locate servers in Russia to comply with the federal law." eBay has not yet decided whether to develop server capacities independently or lease a data center from a third party company, he added.
