China has shut down 225 pornography websites and closed more than 30,000 blogs or microblogs in a campaign that began last month, officials said Wednesday. The State Internet Information Office said unregistered photo sharing, video sharing and gaming sites were among the accounts closed, the official state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Enterprises that illegally allow Internet access to providers of obscene content as well as people who run pornographic websites are being investigated, the agency said in a statement. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) and the Ministry of Public Security are taking part in the investigation, the statement said. The MIIT plans a separate crackdown on unregistered websites and those illegally accessing the Internet or using forged licenses. Another campaign is planned to block gaming and video-sharing websites from offering obscene content.
