A feeling of pride was expressed Tuesday by the Algerian newspapers, which showed its gratitude towards the national football team the day after its elimination, “with honours,” against Germany (2-1) in the last 16 of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
“The Desert Warriors leave the World Cup with pride,” “You were real men on the field and you leave the World Cup as champions,” or even “Farewell Halilhodzic and thank you!,” are the titles of Echourouk daily, which, as the other Algerian newspapers devoted many of its pages to the event.
The game was played in Porto Alegre (Brazil) where the Desert Foxes resisted the “mannschaft,” great favourite for the finale of the tournament.
El Khabar dubbed Algeria’s elimination at the last 16 of the World cup as “an exit with honours,” and a historic step for the Algerian football given that it is the first time the Desert Foxes get to the last 16 for the planetary event.
“The Desert Foxes, Heroic,” was the title of “El Moudjahid” whereas “Horizon” titled in its headline “thank you heroes.”
The same title was chosen by Ennahar daily to congratulate Madjid Bougherra’s teammates for their honourable journey in Brazil, whereas Liberte daily newspaper wrote that “the quarter finals were so close.”
“One, two, three, Thank you Algeria,” headlines sports newspaper Competition, picking up in its own way the famous chorus sang in the Brazilian stadiums in which Algeria played this World Cup “One, two, three, viva l’Algerie.”
