Chairman of Egyptian TV, Essam al-Amir, has announced his resignation in protest against the direction in which the country is heading. In an official statement, al-Amir said that his decision to resign after seeing the bloodshed of Egyptian people was final, despite a resignation notice being turned down in the past. He said: "I offered my resignation from being the Chairman of Egyptian TV to the Minister of Information Salah Abdel-Maksoud last Sunday, but he postponed it and did not consider my request. However, I cannot continue in this high office under the policies administered by the media and the country. This has led to the bloodshed of Egyptian people, so I have decided to resign permanently from the post, regardless of his acceptance. From today, I withdraw from office as Chairman of the Egyptian TV in objection against state administration, and will not go to my office again." As a result, he became the first Chairman of Egyptian TV to leave his position voluntarily and because of the current political situation. Sources say Alaa Bassiouni will be the next Chairman of the Egyptian TV and the successor to Essam al-Amir.
