Sharjah - WAM

Sharjah Media Centre (SMC) has unveiled the first of the projects to be launched by Sharjah as part of the Sharjah Capital of Islamic Culture 2014 (SICC 2014) celebrations. During the launch ceremony of the SICC 2014 logo on Sunday, SMC revealed Al Majaz Island project, the official venue of the Sharjah Capital of Islamic Culture 2014 Celebrations, along with its open theatre, which is set to be the first of its kind in the region, and other facilities. The entire project, whose implementation is supervised by SMC, is estimated to cost AED140 million. Al Majaz Island project has been launched under the directives of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to mark the celebrations of Sharjah as an example to be followed by future Islamic culture capitals. The island is poised to be a significant touristic landmark and an aesthetic point of attraction. This is thanks to its modern facilities which will be constructed according to international architectural standards, in addition to the strategic position it occupies on the banks of Khalid Lagoon, a vital entertainment destination in the emirate. The island also houses an open-air Roman-style amphitheater. Covering 7238 square km, the semi-circular amphitheater will include several terraced seating areas that can accommodate up to 4500 spectators, as well as a huge stage equipped with a state-of-the-art audio system. The AED120 million amphitheater, which is meant to host international cultural and art events mainly, will include conference rooms and galleries, as well as a number of shops, restaurants and green areas that will surround it from all sides along with an outstanding panoramic view of the waterfront. Al Majaz Island project will also include a AED13 million bridge between the island and Khalid Lagoon Street, which will make it an architecturally unique landmark capable of highlighting the significance of SICC 2014. The contract of Al Majaz Island project has been awarded to Gulf International Engineering Consultants and Emirates Stones, whereas that of the bridge has been awarded to Halcrow Group and Al Darwish Engineering.
