BBC News, Al Jazeera and The Los Angeles Times scooped up the top prizes as the Online News Association (ONA) handed out its annual awards on Saturday. Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail, Argentina's La Nacion, France's OWNI and Germany's Zeit Online were also among those recognized by the ONA for their digital journalism efforts. BBC News took the award for general excellence in online journalism by a large site while The Globe and Mail won the award for a medium site. Al Jazeera was honored in the breaking news category for its coverage of the popular uprising in Egypt. The Los Angeles Times won two awards: one for innovative investigative journalism and a second for online video journalism at a large site. The newspaper's investigation of corruption in a small California town also earned a prestigious Pulitzer Prize earlier this year. The online video journalism award for a medium site went to CBC News, Radio Canada and the Alt Digital Design Studio for a story on Palestinian refugees in Lebanon. The same piece was also honored in the multimedia feature category. OWNI won the award for general excellence in online journalism for a small, non-English site for the second year in a row while La Nacion received the honor for a large, non-English site. Zeit Online was honored in the category of outstanding informational, graphic or data visualization. Arianna Huffington, founder of The Huffington Post, won the award for online commentary/blogging for a large site. A complete list of the winners with links to their work is available at the ONA website at journalists.org.
