The German tuning company Tuningwerk weren’t happy with the BMW 1 Series M Coupe‘s standard 355 horsepower 3.0 litre engine. Nor were they happy with the car’s styling, or even its world acclaimed handling. In an effort to tackle these perceived short comings, Tuningwerk have boosted the engine’s output to a monstrous 514 horsepower and 453 lb-ft (614 Nm) of torque. They’ve done that by upgrading the turbochargers and intercooler system, adding a custom exhaust and intake tract, and recalibrating the ECU to take full advantage of the new hardware. Tuningwerk also offer a revised final drive gear ratio which increases torque by 9 per cent, and a limited slip differential with up to 90 per cent lock. Other mechanical upgrades to the Tuningwerk BMW 1M RS include a racing clutch, lower and stiffer suspension from KW, and a more powerful braking system from MovIT. Carbon ceramic discs are an optional extra. As well as the enhancements to the car’s performance and handling, Tuningwerk also offer a number of replacement body panels, all formed from lightweight carbon fiber. The GT4-style front spoiler and large rear wing are also made of the same stuff. The wheels are forged ATS superlight 19-inchers coated in a thin veneer of Dunlop Sport Maxx high-performance tires. While the ‘standard’ Tuningwerk BMW 1M RS comes as standard with the 1 Series M Coupe’s rear bench seat intact, for an few (thousand) extra Euros they’ll rip it out and fit the car with a full roll cage.
