Electricity Minister Ibrahim Shaker, UAE Minister of State Sultan Gaber and Matrouh Governor Alaa Abu Zeid on Thursday opened the first solar energy project in Siwa oasis.
The plant was carried out by a 25-million-dollar grant offered by the UAE.
Opening the facility, Shaker said the plant is to produce 10 megawatts of electricity.
"It contributes to meeting Siwa's full energy needs and will boost social and economic development in the oasis," the minister said.
He hailed the UAE's support for Egypt in all fields, asserting deeply-rooted ties between both countries.
For his part, Sultan Gaber, who in charge of the UAE's aid to Egypt, said his country will help promote the Egyptian Economic Development Conference (EEDC), due to be held on 13-15 March.
