China's weather forecasters issued an orange alert for waves and a yellow alert for storms on Tuesday as Typhoon Megi approached.
Megi, the 17th typhoon this year, is expected to make landfall in coastal eastern Taiwan Tuesday afternoon and move to the southern Fujian coast on Wednesday morning, said China's National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center.
From Tuesday to Wednesday, the typhoon is expected to bring waves of up to 12 meters in waters east of Taiwan. Waves up to eight meters are expected in the East China Sea, around the Diaoyu Islands and Taiwan Strait.
Storm surges of up to 150 centimeters are expected in coastal areas in parts of Zhejiang and Fujian provinces.
In China's four-tier severe weather warning system, red is the most serious alert, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
The National Commission for Disaster Reduction and the Ministry of Civil Affairs Tuesday issued an emergency response to the typhoon, urging local civil affairs departments to be on all-day duty and issue early warning for citizens.
Rainstorms are expected in Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Jiangxi and Anhui over the next three days.
