The procedures for compensating farmers whose cattle were affected by Food and mouth disease (FMD) will "started next week," controller general of veterinary services at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Abdelmalek Bouhbal announced.
Even if "the insurance of livestock is a compulsory process," farmers affected by this disease will be compensated for 80% of the real price of their animals on the market, he said.
Boulahbal stated at a press conference on Saturday at the headquarters of the General Union of Algerian Traders and Artisans (UGCAA), the number of cases of FMD has reached 3500, limited losses compared to 1999 (4 million cases / € 9 million).
For his part, president of the National federation of farmers Boukarabila Mohamed dubbed "appropriate" the decision of the Minister of Agriculture to close livestock markets, saying that "the movement of livestock is necessary as Eid al Adha approaches, as part of a health formula to be defined by the State."
"The import of sheep to cover demand during Eid al Adha is unacceptable, the national sheep production exceeds 25 million," he affirmed.
