Diptyque’s 2012 winter candle collection, inspired by diptyque fabrics, pays homage to its first creations… It is a little known fact today, the House’s identity is so strongly rooted in perfume-making expertise, but the founders’ first business, in the early 1960s, was making and selling upholstery fabric! Diptyque’s founders, Christiane Gautrot, Desmond Knox-Leet and Yves Coueslant, established in the world of fine arts and decoration, were bohemian, creative and visionary. They created fabrics printed with graphic patterns, subtly inspired by contemporary design and minimalist abstraction. As their work developed, the boutique at 34 boulevard Saint Germain proposed coloured candles to match the fabrics. The natural progression was to give the wax a scent. From fabric to perfume, the first Diptyque candle was born… Fabric remained the anchor point of Diptyque’s entire graphical universe. At the time, the fabrics were considered too avant-garde, but today the collection is at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Fifty years later, Diptyque fabrics still surprise us with their modernity and are the source of inspiration for the winter 2012 collection. This winter, Diptyque designed a collection of two candels, available in different sizes, they can decorate any room and give it a unique smell. The coloured candle jars are entirely decorated with unusual, creative and elegant patchwork repeating the most emblematic patterns of the House: “Prétorien”, the oval shape which inspired diptyque’s iconic logo, “Légende”, “Paladin” and “Choriambe”.
