American label Kate Spade is hoping to make cupcakes fashionable again, with the launch of a new dessert-inspired collection in partnership with the most famous cupcake bakery in New York.
In collaboration with Magnolia Bakery, the American fashion house will be launching an accessories collection in the fall that will include a cupcake box tote, banana pudding crossbody bag, illustrated tote and cookbook clutch, reports WWD.
Magnolia Bakery is widely credited with kicking off the worldwide cupcake trend, thanks in large part to Carrie and Miranda’s shout-out to the heavily frosted mini cakes on "Sex and the City."
In the movie 2005 "Prime" with Uma Thurman and Meryl Streep, the shop also makes repeat appearances as the supplier of baked goods for one of the characters who throws pies at his ex-girlfriends.
Meanwhile, it’s not the first fashion-dessert collaboration of its kind.
Earlier this year, French pastry house Ladurée enlisted Italian label Pucci to design "dolce vita" gift boxes.
Last year, Karl Lagerfeld designed a Christmas cake in the shape of a lipstick to mark the 10th anniversary of Alain Ducasse’s Tokyo restaurant Beige.
French pastry chef Pierre Hermé also tapped designer Barbara Rihl to create a line of leather handbags inspired by his macarons and pastries.
And in London, The Berkeley hotel offers fashionistas an English tea service with cakes and cookies inspired by creations of labels such as Alexander McQueen, Jimmy Choo, Oscar de la Renta and Jean Paul Gautier.
