Quiara Alegria Hudes' play "Water by the Spoonful" won the Pulitzer Prize Award for Drama in New York Monday. Also earning awards in the arts categories were "Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention" by the late Manning Marable for History; "George F. Kennan: An American Life" by John Lewis Gaddis for Biography; "Life on Mars" by Tracy K. Smith for Poetry; "The Swerve: How the World Became Modern" by Stephen Greenblatt for General Nonfiction; and "Silent Night: Opera in Two Acts" by Kevin Puts for Music. No prize was awarded this year for Fiction. In the Journalism award categories, the winners are The Philadelphia Inquirer for Public Service; The Tuscaloosa (Ala.) News staff for Breaking News Reporting; Matt Apuzzo, Adam Goldman, Eileen Sullivan and Chris Hawley of the Associated Press, and Michael J. Berens and Ken Armstrong of The Seattle Times for Investigative Reporting; and David Kocieniewski of The New York Times for Explanatory Reporting. Also honored with Pulitzers are Sara Ganim and members of The Patriot-News staff in Harrisburg, Pa., for Local Reporting; David Wood of The Huffington Post for National Reporting; Jeffrey Gettleman of The New York Times for International Reporting; and Eli Sanders of The Stranger, a Seattle (Wash.) weekly for Feature Writing. The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary is Mary Schmich of the Chicago Tribune; for Criticism is Wesley Morris of The Boston Globe; for Editorial Cartooning is Matt Wuerker of Politico; for Breaking News Photography is Massoud Hossaini of Agence France-Presse; and for Feature Photography is Craig F. Walker of The Denver Post.
