District 3 lost out to Union J in the battle of the boybands, destroying their dreams of winning this year's X Factor competition. The bands, both mentored by judge Louis Walsh, were forced into a sing-off after receiving the least amount of votes from the public. Walsh abstained from the vote, emotionally explaining "I'm not sending any of these acts home," but fellow-judges Gary Barlow and Nicole Scherzinger sealed the contest by both opting to save Union J. Pussycat Doll Scherzinger said the defeated band were not ready for success. "Boys, you have my heart, you really do," she said. "The group that I think is a more mature group, and a little bit more ready for this right now is Union J. I'm so sorry." Union J saved themselves with a stirring rendition of Adele's "Set Fire To The Rain".
