Netflix has announced it will revive the recently canceled teen drama Degrassi next year.
No casting or other details about the project were immediately revealed.
"Degrassi graduates to Netflix. Meet the Next Class, coming in 2016," the streaming service tweeted Tuesday.
Filmmaker and lifelong Degrassi fan Kevin Smith swiftly responded to the news with glee.
"Nothing to worry about: brand new episodes of @Degrassi are coming to @netflix!," Smith posted. "Thank you, @Netflix - saver of shows!"
The Degrassi franchise began in 1979 as a series of Canadian, after-school specials. It then continued as the series Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High throughout the 1980s, airing on Canadian television and PBS in the United States. The brand was revived in 2001 as Degrassi: The Next Generation and ran 14 seasons. In the last few years, it has been known simply as Degrassi.
Nickelodeon -- the show's most recent American home -- announced last week it would not air a 15th season of the re-booted program.
