Al Gharafa Club President HE Sheikh Jassim bin Thamer Al-Thani expressed delight at his club's win over Asian champions Al-Noor Club of Saudi Arabia as the two teams kicked off their campaign in the 37th GCC men handball club cup winners championship.
Sheikh Jassim bin Thamer thanked the players for the "great performance" and the technical and administrative staff for the excellent start.
He added that beating the Asian champions has a special meaning, especially when the Saudi side tried to come back to the game in the second half, which posed a tough test for Al Gharafa players.
Al Gharafa president welcomed the Gulf visitors to Qatar and wished them good stay in Doha, stressing his pleasure to host them for such a prestigious tournament that helps in creating generations of leading handball players at the Asian level not just the Gulf.
He extended his thanks to Qatar Media Corporation Chairman HE Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al-Thani for gracing the opening ceremony, which reflects his constant support for his club. He also thanked HE Minister of Culture and Sports Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali for backing the tournament and Al Gharafa Club. Additionally, he hailed the support of Qatar Handball Association, evidenced by the presence of its President Ahmed Al Shaabi.
Speaking after the launch of the championship, HE Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer Al-Thani congratulated the organizing committee for the outstanding organization and hospitality of Gulf guests, adding that what Al Gharafa 's handball team are offering proves that they are a club for all games and are capable of carrying out their role in preparing new generatins of players in all sports.
Sheikh Hamad bin Thamer wished success for the Qatari sides of Al Gharafa and Al Rayyan, hoping that they meet in an all-Qatari final.
