Tokyo's benchmark index soared more than three percent in afternoon trade on Thursday, as a drop in the yen powered exporters and bank shares soared.
The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange surged 3.15 percent, or 515.89 points, to 16,897.11.
